About Us

Nook Puzzles creates unique laser-cut wood puzzles and other personalized items.

Nook Puzzles was born out of a love for jigsaw puzzles and technology.  Established in 2016, Nook Puzzles made its home in Sheridan, Indiana, a small rural farm town in the northern “suburbs” of Indianapolis.  The shop is located along Main Street in Sheridan’s historic Downtown.  With a variety of puzzles on display, visitors can get the full experience of what Nook Puzzles are all about.  It is also a woman-owed, made in the USA, small business, with top of the line lasers (Gerty, Edith, and Mabel)

A note about Nook Puzzle’s approach to pattern design…..

Our approach to pattern design is guided by two simple concepts.  First, it is important that all edge pieces interlock so the completed puzzle holds together when finished.  With that, we also try to ensure as many interior pieces as possible also interlock.  Second, the typical whimsical pattern design is a mix of various character-shaped or themed pieces with fill pieces that are similar to what is found in a standard cut pattern.  That’s not to say an occasional puzzle might not have interlocking pieces nor use standard fill pieces.  But more often than not, that’s what you’ll get.

  • Top Dog

Christine is the dreamer behind the nook, a perfect mix of creativity and laser precision of technology.

  • Manager of the Chaos

Michelle conducts the day to day operations, designing and producing each puzzle, developing new puzzle products, occasionally remembering to interact with social media, feeding the cats, taking out trash, and such.

  • Worker Bees

For the most part, Nook Puzzles is a one-person operation.  However, as the customer base has grown, some “hired help” became necessary.  Meet the processing crew – family friends and local high school students, Avery, Cayden, Eli, Grace, Koen, and Robert.  This bunch of brilliant young adults help process each puzzle for your enjoyment.

  • Customer Relations

Many locals know Nook Puzzles, not so much for the puzzles, but more as “that store with the cat in the window.” Pumpkin has become a fixture of the shop, greeting visitors, demanding pets, and working extra-long hours laying in the front window greeting passers-by.

  • Security

Shop security is manage by Felix, who typically remains in the shadows (hence the name Shadow Lord) keeping an eye on visitors either from under the couch or a dark corner.

What is the difference between “standard” cut and “whimsy” cut?

A "standard" cut pattern is similar to the typical cardboard puzzle found at the big box stores.  The "whimsical" cut incorporates a variety of character/theme-shaped pieces that often reflect the subject of the image.

What is the number of puzzle pieces in each size puzzle?

The puzzle piece count for the “standard” cut puzzles is as follows:

Small (10”x13.5”) – 221pcs

Medium (13”x17.5”) – 391pcs

Large (16”x22”) – 609pcs

What materials are used to make the puzzles?

We use ¼” Baltic Birch plywood for all our puzzles (1/8” Baltic Birch plywood for the “Notecard” puzzles.)  Images are printed using an HP Latex printer on satin photo paper to achieve an archival quality print that will last for years to come.

How long does it take for a Custom Photo Puzzle to be made?

Typically it takes me about two weeks to complete a custom puzzle.  However, during the Christmas holiday season, turn-around time has been closer to four weeks.

Will a proof of the puzzle pattern be sent prior to cutting the puzzle?

If you would like to see a proof of your custom pattern prior to production, simply let us know in the “Notes” section as you place your order.  We are happy to send you a proof.

Do you offer overnight shipping?

While standard shipping (via USPS or UPS) is typically 2-3 days, overnight shipping is an option in most cases.  You will have the option to choose different shipping methods at check-out.
